Extinction Event
My first TIC-80 game, and a remake of maybe the only game I ever truly made, despite doing 3 years of a computer game development degree. I made the original back in February 2012 for Dublin GameCraft, an 8 hour game jam. That version was about 200 lines of CoffeeScript - the entire concept: you’re a dinosaur, don’t get hit by the falling asteroids.
Since the original was so simple it was a good candidate for my first TIC-80 experiment. One and a half prompts to Claude Code later and I had a pretty solid remake. Since I had some time to kill I decided to add a bunch of powerups that you can get, with various synergies, as well as jumping and dodge rolling. It’s not particularly hard to get a perk combo that will just let you live forever, but that’s the beauty of it.
Written in Lua. A nice experiment adding tons and tons of perks to the core gameplay loop.
Controls
- Arrow keys to move
- Z and X (A and B buttons) to jump and dodge
- A and S (L and R bumpers) to fire various perk upgrades
All these games are incomplete and broken. Caveat emptor
